Welcome to Spotlight On. Every first Monday of the month, I will take some time to ramble about a randomly picked actor, musician, writer or celebrity. This is where I focus on the good-side of the person only and (try to) appreciate his or her work. Suggestions are always welcome.
This month? Let’s talk about the lovely Kate Beckinsale. Born in ’73 in London, she made her film debut in Much Ado About Nothing (1993), a romantic comedy based on the classic play by William Shakespeare. Her debut film was directed by Kenneth Branagh and was nominated for a Golden Globe. Significantly, Beckinsale got to portray one of the lead roles – namely Hero who is a young girl intertwined in a romantic relationship with Claudio. Soon to wed, the two lovers have a totally different take on romance in general and so leads to some interesting developments on both sides. Interesting fact is that Beckinsale shot this film during her summer break while she was studying French and Russian at New College, Oxford. Nevertheless, Beckinsale puts down an amazing performance which was a steady factor in making the film a worthy adaptation and a bright start to a successful career.
Stage acting primarily consumed the first part of her career, but gradually she moved to the big Hollywood productions in which the general public familiarized with her. Among many, she starred in the biopic The Aviator (2004) with Leonardo DiCaprio. Over the years she has played various roles — from portraying Amy Fox in the thriller Vacancy (2007) to jumping around in a catsuit portraying the smoking hot vampire Selene.
Does this mean Kate Beckinsale is all work and no play? Absolutely not. Evidently she is not the award-winning type of actor, but that depends on what awards we’re talking about. Other than her modelling work, Beckinsale has been ranked highly by numerous magazines, such as FHM, and even has been awarded ‘the sexiest woman alive’ title by Esquire magazine in 2009. Not only is she popular for her elegant and classy looks, but also for her soft and gentle voice which won millions of hearts worldwide.
I dropped out of Oxford, and now I only speak Russian with the woman who gives me a bikini-wax. See what Hollywood does to you? – Kate Beckinsale
She has had a relationship with Michael Sheen with whom she has a daughter and is currently spoused to Len Wiseman. Fun thing is that she met both of her partners at work and has a tendency to often mix her personal life with her career. That doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing – indeed, she proves the opposite. Her latest movie, Total Recall (2012), was directed by her spouse Len Wiseman and so were the previous ones in the Underworld series. It’s a thing, I guess. LOL.
